Composting?

Ive been looking for instructions online for a home-made compost, but found only IVE actual instructions that the wooden pallets use. the work is .. but not really what I had in mind. Ive havnt read more about some people with buckets or trash, but found no instructions to do so. Also I need a better guide to things made in it .. I know all sorts of natural things you can say .. such as vegetables, paper and grass and leaves .. but you have to do certain amounts of individual things? or they will break all the time. Also, how long before compost? What if I start now, with a pile of leaves and our rabbits bedding (aspen chips) used in the spring when I start in my garden?
