How I can compost?

I know nothing about gardening. But I just bought this house and I d really like a garden in the coming year. I'm reading, and many people recommend the use of mulch to the soil. Instead of buying it, how do I start composting from scratch? Please keep your responses on the plain English-only conditions or explain as you go! LOL! I'm really new to gardening, as I said.
