What is the best "your own" fly repellent?

My family lives in the country and go to save an animal. There are currently flies and here! Crazy any compost pile or the pile of crap, only for animals and home. What the fuck? They feed on animal ears and we too! I did all the dust with diatomaceous earth (a natural pesticide), but does not seem worried about her. I've heard, mint and lemon are great repellents, which work best and how is it used? I do not believe that chemical pesticides, we prefer something natural.
