Tools For A Great Lawn

Each homeowner wants to have the best looking lawn and will use all the available tools to maintain their lawn. So many people assume incorrectly that only a professional landscaper can create a great looking garden. This is not even a little bit true. Hiring a landscape professional will of course reduce your work load, but it is possible for you to have a great looking lawn without the help of a landscape professional.

Though there is no shortage of lawn maintenence equipment, there are a few that are critical for the general maintenence of a good looking lawn. Without these tools, any kind of lawn care would become impossible. Some of these crucial tools are lawnmowers, rakes, aerators and shears.

Aerators are very important tools for lawn care since they create cavities or holes on the upper most layer of the soil. This enables the soil to move better. Because or aeration water and vitamins get into the soil and reach the lawns roots. Not only this, it also enhances the levels of oxygen in the soil, and therefore helps the roots to prosper and flourish.

Lawnmowers are essential for giving a lawn a well manicured look. Since it trims the dead grass and helps in the growth of healthy grass, it provides a great service to your lawn. If you do choose to not purchase the recommended tools for your lawn, you must use a lawnmower which is extremely important.

Shears are one of those tools that are used to keep the hedges around the lawn with cutting and trimming the hedges as needed. If you have a creative streak in you, then you can even design your hedges according to your fancy with the help of shears. Therefore, it is a quite important tool for your home lawn and garden.

Other than the afore mentioned tools, rakes are very important to the health of your lawn. With the help of rakes, you can remove the leaves from your Los Altos garden. This is a very important thing to do as leaves that pile up do not let water and sunlight reach your grass and thusly the grass could die.

Getting these tools will not be hard as most hardware store or your neighborhood home improvement store will have these immportant tools. So, if you use these tools for maintaining your lawn, there is no reason why you should not have a glowing and healthy garden throughout the year and that too, without the assistance of professionals who specialize in metal landscape edging.

Pocket Gophers: What are they?

Pocket gophers are rodents, medium to small in size, which burrow, spending 99% of their lifespan in underground tunnels and nests. Gophers have external cheek pouches on the outdie of their mouths where they store food for their young. There are a wide array gopher species in North America.  They are powerful diggers, have front paws with large claws which make them the enemy of many home owners with well manicured lawns. The pocket gopher is well suited for digging holes and tunnels because the generally live underground, and when over populated, pocket gophers become difficult to control.

Pocket gophers eat roots of grass, forbs, shrubs, and even someitmes small trees. They can be very destructive for forest plantations. Actually, every year the US Forestry Service contract out work to manage pocket gophers in order to safeguard newly planted tree seedlings. These mamals are herbivores that love to eat all kinds of plants in yards, gardens and flowerbeds. The burrow systems gophers dig are multi-branched and individuals tend to be territorial. During studies in California, where radio collars were placed on gophers, some gophers were tracked moving 200-300 ft per night. Just one gopher might dig up to 250 mounds per year, moving almost 4 tons of soil within a few weeks. Burrows constalty change and evolve, with some tunnels sealed off and new ones created. How many sizable tunnels and burrows are created? No one can really say but gophers cause serious damage for property owners.

Pocket gophers work year round, during the winter, the summer, even during heavy snow fall. In alfalfa fields, gophers are often watched feeding above ground. Generally, gophers cruise along their tunnel systems and eat roots from plants growing  directly above the tunnels. An simple way to figure out if a pocket gopher occupies a tunnel system is to simply dig open the tunnel. If gophers are active then they will fill in that hole, in this case, you have gophers.

Gophers are one of the most difficult to manage in the U.S. EPA approved baits and traps are generally used to reduce potential impact gophers may have on the environment. Some bait includes the following active ingredients: strychnine, diphacinone, chlorophacinone, and zinc phosphide. {Tablets and cartridges containing fumigants are acceptable ways to address a pocket gopher infestation}. However, because of the length of the tunnel systems, such fumigants may not be very effective.

How to Look After Your Lawn During the Winter

In winter you should ensure that there is no new growth on your grass as this will make it more likely to succumb to pests and diseases. To do this gradually, decrease the the cutting blade height of your lawnmower until you are just about shaving the grass. Do this in steps over several weeks as you don’t want to abruptly remove all the leaf tissue or inflict extra damage to the turf. You should not let the grass grow longer than 2 inches during the winter.

Apply top dressing to the lawn at the end of autumn. Even though it won’t be used by the grass over the winter it will be reserved in the roots and be immediately usable by the grass in the Spring when new growth starts. Re-seed brown or bare areas during the Fall. During the colder weather the grass seeds will germinate.

Clear up any rubbish from the grass before the severest weather. This includes branches, logs, equipment, flower pots etc. If left in place when it starts to snow they could smother the grass beneath the covering of snow and cause damage which can make the lawn susceptible to disease. During the winter, although the grass grows not as fast weeds will thrive so you must weekly remove weeds to prevent them from harming the turf.

As well you should still water the lawn through the winter, although less often than you would in the warmer weather. For most grass species watering each week should be sufficient. Other grasses, e.g. rye grass and tall fescue grow well in the winter and will need more water during this time.

Should you use a watering system empty out all the water to prevent damage when below freezing. You do not want to get it out next Spring to find damaged pipes.

With some care your grass will survive the cold weather in good shape and emerge healthy and green when it starts to grow again in the Spring.  Winter lawn care is easy if you stick to our guidelines. You’ll find more information on lawn care and lawn mowers at lawn mower reviews.
